Brodarious Hamm: Overcoming the Odds
Auburn Offensive Lineman Brodarious Hamm shares with Untold Athletes how he was able to overcome his cancer diagnosis and the eventual passing of his son Karter. His faith and strength inspires us all.
“In February 2016, about two weeks after my signing day, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. The news came as a complete shock. At first I didn't believe it because I felt perfectly fine, but as time went on and the new settled in, I knew I had to be strong and beat it.”
“Beating cancer was one thing in itself. The treatments and radiation took a toll on my body that I wasn't prepared for. I was sleepy all the time and my body felt very weak. I gained about 45 pounds through the course of my treatments, so it was hard to get back in shape for football. I knew it was going to be hard, but I also knew that nothing worth having comes easy. So I was up for the challenge.”
“For a short period of time I was scared that I wouldn’t make it back onto the field. I was scared that I wouldn't be able to do what I loved anymore. But I knew that God would see me through this and that whatever he had planned for me, I was ready for it.”
“Karter has been my inspiration to play and be the best that I can be since day one. Now that he’s gone, I go 100 times harder. Everything I do is for him. My number one piece of advice is never give up. As long as you keep God above everything else, you can get through anything.”
“I can't say enough good things about my Auburn family. They've been there for me through everything I couldn't be more appreciative and thankful. I love everything about football. From the physicality aspects, to the mental aspect of the game, I love it all.”
